The Pentax K-r adds a few new features, most notably the 6fps burst shooting mode and expanded ISO range, to the proven user interface of the cheaper K-x and the high-resolution screen and illuminated AF system of the more expensive K-7, to create a compelling mid-range DSLR. It's also significantly cheaper than its main rivals.
Although to all intents and purposes it looks and feels virtually identical to the year-old K-x, don't let that put you off the K-r. The bigger and higher-res screen, improved auto-focus complete with illuminated points, faster 6fps continuous mode, and ISO range of 100-25600 all add up a camera that's well-positioned between the entry-level K-x and the venerable but still capable K-7.
The small and lightweight design, increased number of creative filters and effects, hand-holding auto modes and the compact-like handling make the K-r ideally suited to first-time DSLR owners. At the same time the extensive range of manual modes, wide ISO range, fastest shutter speed of 1/6000th, 100,000 shutter life-span, long battery life and not one but two RAW formats are music to the ears of more experienced shooters.

Pentax K-x Review
The Pentax K-x is a worthy competitor for the major manufacturers out there, and is probably in line for the third best with the other smaller camera companies. Since the days of the K10D and the K100D, Pentax has made affordable DSLRs with great form factors, exceptional build quality and superb image quality. The K-x does not stray from that formula. The K-x is a great younger brother to their top-of-the-line K-7, though not without a few flaws.
The LCD isn't great, focusing in live view is frustrating, battery power is drained quickly, HD video is somewhat noisy, and it can be slow to process images. But what it lacks in these areas it makes up for in price, image quality, construction, the perfect resolution, unique in-camera processing options, exceptional ISO performance and continuous shooting speed.
The Pentax K-x offers a great value for its price. It gives you total control of image processing, manual shooting, a few post-processing shortcuts, and easy-to-use automatic and scene modes that makes it an entry-level to intermediate camera. Yes it has some quirks, it can be slow at times, and it drains battery juice at the drop of a hat, but we can't deny that the K-x is top notch otherwise.

The Pentax K-7 is one of the more exciting new DSLR cameras of 2009, signalling Pentax’s entry into the super-competitive semi-pro category. Pentax DA 15mm F4ED AL Limited Lens Review
Although I use multiple camera brands and lenses, I have a special place in my heart for prime lenses from Pentax. Sure, there are modern zoom lenses that cover extreme wide angle, such as Pentax's own 12-24mm F4 zoom or Sigma's 10-20mm zoom, but you will never find a zoom lens that is as distortion-free as the Pentax DA 15mm Limited. The excellent wide angle focal length, resistance to flare and fantastic control over distortion make this a must have for landscape photographers. The 15mm focal length also works well as a portrait lens if you're looking for an interesting perspective on your subjects. As long as you're willing to stop down the lens to a higher aperture you will be extremely happy with the sharpness this lens can provide.
In short, the new 15mm Limited is a fantastic wide angle lens with outstanding control over distortion, great edge-to-edge sharpness when stopped down past f/5.6, and exceptional build quality common to the Limited series lenses. If you're in the market for a wide angle lens, this is a great option.

Pentax smc DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited review
The Pentax smc DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited is a unique lens in the current market, a small, lightweight wideangle prime for APS-C cameras. And let's make it clear from the outset that Pentax should be applauded for producing such a lens, to provide a genuine alternative to the wideangle zooms which are the only option in other manufacturers' lineups. This is indeed typical of the company's attitude towards primes in general; it makes arguably the best APS-C optimized set currently on the market, which counts as something of a selling point for the K system as a whole.
The 15mm is not a bad performer, either. Chromatic aberration is reasonably under control (and easy to correct if necessary), falloff is low at just 1.3 stops wide open, and rectilinear distortion is essentially absent. Also important in real-world shooting is the fact that the lens is very resistant to flare when shooting into the light, an especially desirable characteristic for a wideangle optic. Unfortunately though it's rather soft wide open, and even when stopped down is never breathtakingly sharp in the fashion we'd hope for from a premium prime. This is a little disappointing, especially considering the price and relatively slow maximum aperture; but then again you rarely have to shoot a lens this wide at F4 anyway (especially with the in-body stabilization in all current and recent Pentax DSLRs).
One positive aspect not to be overlooked though is Pentax's signature 'Limited' build quality, which is excellent. The machined aluminium barrel, engraved markings and smooth focus ring may have no effect on the final image, but they certainly make the lens a more desirable object in its own right, and one which is a pleasure to use. The sliding lens hood, of course, will have a genuinely positive impact on image quality, and the fact that it's built-in makes it much more likely to be used as a matter of course. Thankfully the metal construction doesn't result in excess weight, and the lens is eminently portable, making it ideal if you don't want to deal with the bulk of a wideangle zoom.

Pentax K2000 Digital Camera Review
Performance:
The Pentax K2000 proved itself competitive in key image quality areas against several more expensive cameras, particularly when it comes to image noise and dynamic range. Color accuracy was lower than we'd like, but this is a measure of accuracy, not beauty, and the images we shot in the field, under a variety of lighting conditions, came out well.
Components:
The quality of the camera construction impressed us, with the exception of a plastic mount on the kit lens (yes, other inexpensive lenses have plastic mounts too, but the bayonet design of the Pentax mount makes us more sensitive to its durability). The LCD and optical viewfinder are both adequate, though nothing special. As for the use of AA batteries when most of the SLR world goes with lithium ion rechargeables, we found a set of inexpensive nickel metal hydride rechargeables held out for long shooting sessions, and if we ran out of juice, finding a fresh power source was a lot easier than trying to charge a lithium ion battery on the go.
Handling:
The Pentax K2000 body is quite compact, better suited to those with small hands but not so small that your large-pawed reviewer found it unpleasant to work with. The rubberized grip is a nice feature when most inexpensive cameras offer textured plastic instead. The main menu system is slightly confusing but the basics are easy enough to find, and the rear LCD control panel offers quick access to key shooting settings. As for the built-in help system, it's better than nothing, but we'd be far more enthusiastic about this feature if it was available within the menu system.
Controls:
The button and dial layout are straightforward and uncluttered, though we would have liked the buttons to stick out further from the camera body; it's difficult to feel your way around the controls without looking, or if you're shooting at night. The white balance system works well, and allows fine-tuning with an interactive preview to display the effect of settings changes. We would like to have seen a depth of field preview function, but the intended audience probably won't know it's missing.

Pentax DA* 55mm f/1.4 SDM Lens Review
As most of our regular readers know, I have a special place in my heart for prime lenses, and for Pentax. Modern zoom lenses provide the most flexibility when composing, but prime lenses offer better low light performance and the ability to isolate your subject with shallow depth of field. The 55mm focal length on Pentax DSLRs works well as a general portrait lens, and the SDM auto focus motor makes this lens much quieter than previous-generation prime lenses.
In short, the new 55mm is an amazing lens with fabulous edge-to-edge sharpness, great bokeh, and exceptional build quality common to the best Pentax prime lenses. However, auto focus inconsistencies and some strong purple fringing wide open at f/1.4 make this lens a questionable value at full MSRP ... at least as long as the old FA 50mm lens is still available.
Pros:

Pentax K2000 / K-m Review
The entry-level DSLR sector has become argue ably the hardest-fought camera sector over the past year. Reduced-spec, cheaper DSLRs have appeared from all the major camera companies, looking to tempt compact camera users across to the 'will it fit in my pocket?' divide. Pentax has responded to this with the K2000/K-m. In most respects it's a smaller, friendlier K200D with a little less mass and a little more mass-appeal.
And, to Pentax's credit, they've taken very little away from the K200D and clearly spent a lot of time making it as user-friendly as possible. The on-screen control panel is very well done, making it easy to find and change all the key shooting settings and meaning the top LCD (one of the few K200D features that has been removed), is unlikely to be missed by many. The automatic scene mode selection feature (which is becoming increasingly common on compacts), is a nice touch, too.
So our first impressions of the K2000 were very positive - it's a well designed little thing with some of the best build quality in its class and a level of accessibility that makes it probably the best beginners DSLR Pentax has yet made.
However, the thing we liked least about the K200D - its JPEG engine - appears to have been inherited, unchanged from the old model, which is quite a drawback for a camera aimed at the first time user. The default bright, high-contrast and saturated look makes sense for this target audience (though they're a bit much for our tastes), but the poor level of detail if you examine the images closely puts the K2000 at the bottom of its class for image quality. We're also not convinced that the same users who want those punchy colors will be best served by the low levels of noise reduction (or that they'll find custom setting 12 to change it), and rather conservative metering. This isn't a problem for the more experienced user, of course, who is more likely to apply exposure compensation and be happy to shoot in RAW and process the images later to get the best out of them.

Nikon D60 vs. Pentax K2000
I end up making this statement a lot around here, but I think the foregoing comparison is just another reinforcement of its truth: DSLRs these days are, basically without exception, all quite good. Sure, some do certain things better than others. But if taking great images is your chief concern, there's no need to fret over your SLR decision. The results you'll get from either of the cameras evaluated today – or similar options from Canon, Olympus, and Sony – shouldn't fail to impress.
Of course, there are reasons – mostly considerations of how you like to use your camera, or what you want to do with it – to choose one over the other. If you're looking for a camera that you can grow into and explore settings with, or a camera that lets you experiment cost-effectively with various lenses, the K2000 is a fantastic new option and a great value besides, given all the new tech it packs in. If you're wanting a DSLR to ease the transition from your point-and-shoot – a rock solid performer that does its thing without fuss – the D60 is probably the compact DSLR for you. Whichever you prefer, with one of these options you're basically guaranteed a capable camera that's easier to tote around than your typical SLR and easier on your wallet.

Pentax K2000 Review
Since my day-to-day cameras are a Pentax K10D and Pentax *ist DL, I was curious how the K2000 would compare. I expected the camera to perform better than the *ist DL but fall short of the K10D. Sure enough, the K2000 performed almost exactly as expected. In short, this is one amazing little camera.
As someone who still uses an old Pentax *ist DL when I'm on vacation, this camera will very likely become my new travel camera of choice. At the MSRP of $699.95 ($599.95 street price) for the camera, lens, and flash, the K2000 offers a solid value compared to other cameras in the same price range.
Pros:
* Small and light
* Uses AA batteries
* Excellent in-camera processing options
* Good high-ISO performance in terms of detail versus noise
* Improved user interface

Pentax smc FA 50mm 1:1.4 review
If you've already read our reviews of either the Canon EF 50mm F1.4 USM or the Nikon AF-Nikkor 50mm F1.4D, then our findings for the Pentax equivalent won't come as much of a surprise. Clearly the conclusions are a little abbreviated in comparison, as Pentax currently only offer APS-C format DSLRs, but the lens's properties are extremely similar. This simply reflects the quality and maturity of the 7 element 6 group, all-spherical 50mm F1.4 general design; the three lenses show individual strengths and weaknesses, but overall are more similar than they are different.
The standout characteristic of the Pentax is arguably it's extremely low distortion, which is the lowest of the 50mm F1.4s we've tested. And when the aperture is stopped down to F2.2 or smaller, it's impressively sharp corner-to-corner, right across the APS-C frame. It's important to understand here that the 50mm F1.4 is much sharper than typical consumer zooms; even at F2.8 it surpasses both the DA 16-45mm 1:4 ED AL and the DA 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 AL shot at 45mm and their optimum apertures around F8.
However this excellent showing when stopped down does come at the cost of an unconvincing performance at large apertures; the lens is very soft indeed at F1.4, and while we described the Canon 50mm F1.4 as 'dreamy', the Pentax renders scenes more as though you're looking through a fine veil of mist. This is accompanied by a distinctly problematic rendition of out-of-focus backgrounds, to which it imparts a jarringly hard-edged appearance and substantial levels of green/magenta chromatic aberration. This in turn slightly limits the lens's usefulness for shallow depth of field portrait use, an application for which the (much more expensive) Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM is rather better suited. Indeed it will be interesting to see how Pentax have chosen to design the recently-announced DA* 55mm F1.4 SDM, which is described as being particularly suitable for portraiture.
So in summary, this is a lens that you buy for its stellar performance when stopped down a bit, and for the fact that it can be opened up to F1.4 when necessary rather than the imagery it creates when it gets there. This makes it an excellent complement to zooms, offering additional capabilities for when light levels drop or shallow depth of field is desired. It may no longer quite be state-of-the-art as far as fast primes are concerned, but still it offers a lot of value for a relatively low price.
